When many people think of private investigators, they have romantic images of television P.I.'s chasing people through the streets. Philadelphia's Gary DeFinis said the work is not as glamorous as that faced by the likes of Barnaby Jones, Frank Cannon and Joe Mannix.

Mr. DeFinis was one of Philadelphia youngest licensed private Investigator when he was licensed in 1997. Before, he became licensed in Pennsylvania, DeFinis spent seven years working as an understudy with several professional investigators and firms.

Generally, a company or individual hires DeFinis when they cannot come to a settlement with a claimant. DeFinis said he experiences plenty of interesting day on the job.

For instance, he kept surveillance on a man who claimed he suffered back injuries. DeFinis tracked the guy to a park, where the man set up a picnic with his wife and child. Because the picnic site was surrounded by trees, DeFinis needed a way to get videotape of the man. So he rented a canoe and went out in the middle of a nearby lake, hiding his small camera in a sweatshirt. The camera can get a good shot of a subject's face from a quarter-mile away. In this case, the man's back seemed to heal miraculously. DeFinis taped him moving firewood, an ice cooler and a barbecue grill.

DeFinis also conducts domestic investigations relating to child custody cases and cheaters. Deadbeat dad or deadbeat mom driving you nuts yet? Has Daddy Dearest been keeping up with his payments?
